KYB TV Episode 3: How to Choose the Best Shocks

The best shocks, no matter how you are using your truck or SUV.

The best shocks can offer more than just a smooth ride, they can help restore your truck’s handling and control or even provide additional control when towing or hauling. All KYB shock absorbers are designed to the highest standards and are manufactured in the same facilities that build shocks for new vehicle manufacturers. We understand that people use their trucks and SUVs in different ways and it’s important to give people a choice when choosing the best shock for their truck.

If you loved the way your truck or SUV rode and handled new, we suggest choosing the KYB Excel-G. If you are looking for additional control because you are occasionally hauling or have larger tires and wheels, we recommend the KYB Gas-a-just. If you are doing full-time work with your truck and hauling heavy loads, choose the KYB MonoMax. KYB’s line of truck shocks ensures you get the best shock for how you use your truck or SUV.

  1. Can you mix the types from front and rear? I have a 1999 Honda CRV, I want the ride comfort for the rear seat passengers and tighten up the steering response for the front so I was thinking about the gas adjust. Is this recommended?

  2. How to tell if a kyb shock has been copied …an what to look for to know its derffrents ?? Thank you

  3. Great Video, I have a 2019 Ford F350 Crew Cab, Diesel, SRW short bed. Now I pull our camper 5-6 times a year and the factory shocks on the truck work just fine, great ride. Would you recommend the Excel G or the MonoMax? The 5th wheel is 15000 lbs loaded. I still had no issues towing it.

  4. Thank you for the clear explanation. I’m in the market for KYB shocks for a Toyota Fun Cargo 2003, which I use to transfer loads up to 400-420 kilo daily. Thanks to this video I now know which one I have to choose.

  5. Getting ready to do a suspension replacement on my 2008 Nissan Pathfinder. Looking at the Excel g quick strut for the front and was debating between the Excel g versus the gas adjust for the rear. Is the gas adjust a stiffer ride compared to the Excel g? I do anticipate the occasional towing (about 3,500 lb trailer) but this vehicle is much more frequently used as a daily driver so ride quality is my priority.

  6. I have managed to buy the rear KYB Excel-gas shocks for my 2014 Mitubishi Mirage Hatchback! Now where can I buy the rear springs shown on facebook? KYB RZ5121?

  7. I put a set of the gas-a-just on my 01 Grand Cherokee w/4" lift and 31" tires. They are about 3 years old and ride exactly like they did the day i put them on (approx. 45k miles). They ride much MUCH firmer than stock. Especially in the rear. The Jeep is my work vehicle, i do remote welding on farm equipment and pull a trailer with my welder and tools so the stiff rear is great for me. I like the sportier ride, personally and they noticeably reduce body roll in corners. On little bumps/wash boards they are harsh at low speed. However, the faster you go, the better they get!

  13. I went with a gas a just because I have an older vehicle and I don’t think the installs shocks were great back then even though I don’t plan on towing things, it is a truck and heavy on its own

  14. Had KYB gas adjust on a 1989 5.0 mustang LX. 👍
WOW! Did they work well 25 years. Never should have sold the Stang. 😢

  15. Problem is for most cars you don’t even make the gas adjust option if you wanted mono tubes You only have your Excel g which I’ve used before and liked would really wanted mono tubes

  16. A shop put monomax on my 2000 f150 and they are horrible Way to stiff , i feel like my whole truck is falling apart from stiffness

  17. What is best choice for dirt roads, including mountain trails?…
Now have larger-than-OEM tires. Went from 235/75R15 to 31×10.5R15.
    No towing.
Tried Excel-G, but they wore out too quickly.
Tried Monomax, but only felt good for 1 month. After that, compression phase too stiff and extension phase too weak.

  18. The last set of KYB shocks I installed didn’t even last 18 months, both ended up leaking, I’ll never buy this brand again.

  19. I put the gas adjust on my 2005 Ram truck. The difference was night and day. It rides great now. Dodge trucks are heavy in the front. These shocks are great. And the price was n’t bad either. I will always buy KYB shocks from here on out.

  21. Always wondered what the differece is between mounting shocks in front of the rear axle or on the back of the rear axle?

  22. The mechanic who installed our KYB shocks missed that explanation and did not even give us options to choose which one.

Been to other shops just to check what’s wrong with our ride coz something’s not right. Now I know which one, Excel G it is.

  23. Got a stupid question, when you say “restore original ride quality”, so there are essentially many kinds of Excel-G? Like obviously the factory 4Runner shock is diffeeent than the factory F150 etc. so how can one KYB restore just any factory ride??

  24. Thanks much for the explanation. I mistakenly put on heavier rims and I feel it immediately, the oil kyb shocks I noticed can’t handle the weight so now I know to buy the gas shocks
